Motorists are being warned of long delays on the A50 this morning after a HGV crashed down an embankment.

Emergency services were called to the scene between the Foley Street interchange and the Heron Cross slip road on the westbound carriageway shortly before 6.20am.

The carriageway was shut at around 7.05am while recovery work took place, before reopening again by 8am.

A spokesman for traffic monitoring company Inrix said: “The A50 Westbound was closed due to recovery work following an accident involving a lorry between B5039 / Cooke Street (Foley Road Interchange) and A5007 Victoria Place Link (Heron Cross / Fenton).

“The road was confirmed closed at 7.05am while recovery of the lorry takes place after it had gone down the embankment.”
