The southbound carriageway is the D-road is closed between the A527 in Porthill and A53 in Etruria until 5am on Monday morning (February 24).
Inrix, the traffic data company, currently reports: “Queueing traffic on A50 Waterloo Road in both directions between A527 Reginald Mitchell Way (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent) and A53 Cobridge Road (Cobridge Traffic Lights, Stoke-on-Trent).
“Due to traffic diverting from the Southbound A500 D road closure for roadworks. Causing delays to multiple bus services.”
Motorists have also been reporting issues on High Lane, around Smallthorne Roundabouts and near Wolstanton retail park – with one person commenting on our traffic page saying Tunstall had been gridlocked since around 9am.
The work – which was due to take place last weekend but postponed due to Storm Dennis – is part of the A500 Etruria widening project.
Highways England, who are carrying out the work said: “We will close the A500 southbound over the weekend in preparation for phase 2 of the scheme.
“We’ll be removing the existing central reserve safety barrier and installing the new traffic management layout.
“From Monday February 24, we will be working overnight from Sunday to Thursday. We will keep one lane open each night and three lanes open during the daytime in both directions.
“Phase 2 will involve the removal of the existing central reserve safety barrier and drainage, followed by installation of new drainage and a concrete central reserve barrier.”
