Agent has his say on Port Vale’s Shaun Brisley after contract offer

Phil Sproson has begun representing Shaun Brisley and is weighing up options for the experienced defender.

Brisley, aged 30, has been offered a new deal by Port Vale after impressing in the second half of last season.

The centre half was brought to Vale Park by John Askey last summer, having been freed by Notts County.  He found his chances limited, because Leon Legge and Nathan Smith were excellent in central defence, so had to largely make do with Trophy appearances before impressing in the league when Smith was forced out through injury.

Sproson is pleased the former Macclesfield, Peterborough and Carlisle defender showed Vale fans what he is capable of.

He said: “He has a pedigree and has played higher.

“Like a lot of Vale fans, I saw him signing and thought that could be a decent one. But then he never appeared. Nathan and Leon’s form was so good that you couldn’t possibly leave either of them out.

“You felt a bit sorry for him but then, when he did get his chance, at Macc in that night game, he looked a little bit rusty. It is difficult when you are not playing every week. But John Askey has enough about him to know that quality doesn’t go away. Your form might leave you from time to time but your ability won’t.

“I think once Shaun started to play games he got stronger and stronger and showed he is an asset to the Vale.

“He is still young for a centre back. He has a good three years in his legs.”

Sproson, who made 500 appearances for the Vale, also represents Jake Taylor and recommended him to the club when the midfielder signed on loan from Nottingham Forest last summer.

The agent, who also recommended John Askey before his appointment last year, says Vale is close to his heart but he has to do the best for his players.

He said: “Just because I have a big soft spot for the Vale doesn’t mean I would sell Shaun short. He has sought me out for advice and asked me to look after him and I have said yes, no problem.

“It is something we are looking at. There is interest from one other (club). But you have to take everything into consideration.

“But I am hopeful we can get it resolved and get him back into a Vale shirt. I do think he will be an asset to the Vale.”
