Alton Towers half marathon event will include running and rollercoasters

Avid runners will have the exciting opportunity to run a half marathon through a Staffordshire theme park before jumping on the rollercoasters.

Alton Towers Resort is set to be the backdrop for a 10 kilometre, and half marathon run organised by RunThrough UK later this year.

The event – held on Sunday, November 14, 2021 – will offer runners of all abilities the chance to race around the resort which is usually packed out with thrill-seekers.

The unique race will see thousands of runners take one lap of the park to complete 10k, or opt for a second lap to clock up a half marathon, starting at finishing at the Grade I listed building within the site.

After crossing the finish line, participants will have exclusive access to hop on the likes of Smiler, Wickerman or Rita, as the park will be closed to the public.

Organisers, RunThrough UK, said: “We are excited to bring a new and unique event to their calendar adding to their already jam packed list of events with over 200 chip timed races UK wide. With massive success bringing events to some of the UK’s most famous landmarks including Aintree Racecourse, Goodwood Motor Circuit, Colchester Zoo, Hampton Court Palace and many more.

“This event is set to provide thrills both during and after the race as runners take in a full 10k loop around the Theme Park before it opens to the public, giving them a unique and exhilarating view of this national treasure.

“Starting and finishing next to the iconic Alton Towers ruins, the route will take participants on a fun-packed adventure past some of the most famous rides Alton Towers Resort has to offer including the Congo River Rapids, Nemesis, Hex, Rita, Oblivion and The Smiler!”

Online entries are open now, with early bird fees costing £34 for the 10k, or £38 for the half marathon.

All finishers will receive a unique themed medal, RunThrough Kit Technical T-shirt, free official photography, a goody bag, free parking and free use of the theme park rides after the race.
