Another North Staffordshire pub caught up in Covid outbreak as 500 tested in one day

Another pub has been caught up in a coronavirus outbreak sweeping through a village.

The Crown Inn, in Silverdale, has now become the 10th venue linked to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Anyone who was in the Brook Street boozer on Saturday, August 22 is now being urged to get a coronavirus test over the bank holiday weekend.

And a similar plea is being made to drinkers who visited The Vine, in Silverdale, on Sunday, August 23.

Latest data shows 15 confirmed cases are now linked to the original outbreak at a bingo night at Silverdale Working Men’s Club (WMC) on Sunday, August 16. These cases have now been linked to 10 venues in Silverdale and Newcastle.

It comes as more than 500 people had Covid tests on Friday.

Staffordshire County Council‘s director of health and care, Dr Richard Harling, said: “We need everybody who visited these venues to get a test this weekend.

“I would like to thank all the businesses for quickly providing details of customers to allow us to quickly contact them.

“The testing and tracing is vital to help identify people who may have the virus and help contain the spread of infection even further.”

Silverdale WMC is now closed until September 7 following talks with Public Health England and the council.

Its Facebook post states: “This action should safeguard the well-being and health of staff, committee members and customers. It will also reduce the risk to the general community.”

The Kiln, in High Street, Newcastle, has also been caught up in the outbreak. It says it is operating ‘stringent safety precautions’.

A Facebook post states: “All staff undergo temperature checks prior to starting a shift and have received additional training.

“Clear social distancing measures and enhanced cleaning regimes together with our order at table app, single use menus, reduced capacity and restricted trading hours enable us to monitor and control our business effectively.

“All guests who visited on August 22 are requested to book a test and follow the Government’s guidelines.”

A drive-in mobile testing centre remains open at the former Knutton Recreation Centre from 10.30am to 3.30pm today and tomorrow. Walk-in tests are also available.

The walk-through testing centre is open daily from 8am to 8pm at the Ryecroft car park, in Newcastle.
