Another Stoke-on-Trent school hit by coronavirus case as several staff self-isolate

Several staff at a city school are self-isolating after a colleague tested positive for coronavirus.

The Excel Academy, in Sneyd Green, said the confirmed case involved a ‘non-teaching’ member of staff who had no symptoms.

They had spent two hours in school late last week before finding out that a relative had started to feel poorly. The staff member began self-isolating and had a Covid-19 test as a precaution, which came back positive.

Principal Darren Bishop wrote to families today to let them know about the coronavirus case.

In his letter, he said: “We were able to ask the small number of staff who had been in direct close contact, to self-isolate. To further reassure you, the member of staff had not been in close contact with any students.

“By acting quickly and decisively, the situation has been dealt with completely. Public Health England are confident in our approach and informed us that the action we have taken was sufficient to ensure the safety of staff and students and no further action is required.”

Mr Bishop is now urging parents to send children into school with face masks as an extra layer of safety.

“We are recommending that face coverings be worn in the corridors between lessons and indoor communal areas at lunch and break,” he added.

Alpha Academies Trust, which oversees The Excel Academy, said routine deep cleans were already taking place at the school.

But some families have voiced concerns about pupils not socially distancing and milling about outside the school.

Local resident Mark Bask, who lives across the road from the school entrance, claimed he had seen ‘chaos’ outside the school gates.

He said: “There are hundreds of pupils and teachers just standing around the gates, chatting away, and some pupils passing their phones to teacher to browse whatever they were looking at and laughing and joking.”

The Excel Academy case has come to light just a day after The Discovery Academy, which is part of the same trust, also revealed a member of staff has Covid-19. The cases are not connected.
