Balloon artist brightening up North Staffordshire street with her rainbow house during Covid-19

A balloon artist has been making people smile after adorning her house with a rainbow installation.

Angharad Hurlstone started Anghard’s Party Art last September, after making balloon decor for family and friends.

Now the 32-year-old has used various coloured balloons to create giant rainbow art on the front of her Newcastle home.

She said: “Everyone was doing rainbow pictures and paintings and putting them in their window, so I decided to use my skill to make people smile.

“I didn’t want to go rusty, and I had a lot of balloons as people have had to cancel bookings, so I wanted to use them for something.”

The last weekend in March was set to be Angharad’s busiest week in business this year. But due to the Covid-19 lockdown, she was left with hundreds of balloons and a lot of free time.

Angharad has created clusters of 15 to 20 balloons in every colour, crafting a crawling rainbow from almost 300 balloons. It stretches diagonally across the front of her house in Roberts Avenue.

In the centre, one balloon says ‘stay at home’, promoting the advice given out by the Government.

“It took me about four hours to make,” she said. “I was blowing up all of the balloons with my compressor, then making clusters.

“We had a lot of fun making it, and it definitely kept me busy.

“NHS workers on the way to the hospital have commented on how much it’s made them smile, and people have been walking past and snapping pictures.”

Some of the balloons have started to pop due to the wind, but Angharad still has enough balloons to create more fun projects to brighten peoples’ days on their daily walks.

She added: “It’s heartbreaking that I can hear them popping, but the balloons aren’t made for outside. I’ve had to halve the rainbow to keep it looking lovely.

“I might put something else on the house, as I have enough balloons for it – I’m a bit of a balloon hoarder!

“I hope it’s made people smile and brightened their day.”
