Birthing Unit to close to help hospital cope with COVID-19 demand



A birthing unit at a Staffordshire hospital is closing temporarily from Monday.

University Hospital of the North Midlands said The Freestanding Birthing Unit and Midwifery Home Birthing Service at Stafford County Hospital were closing ‘part of a planned strategy to help UHNM cope with extra pressures and demands being faced as a result of COVID-19’.

Women booked to give birth at the centre will be offered a place Royal Stoke University Hospital – and all those who have booked places are being contacted.

The last admission to FMBU will accepted at 8am on Sunday 22 March 2020.

Michelle Rhodes, UHNM Chief Nurse, said: “We have a duty to provide safe care to our patients – including our expectant families and this decision will help us achieve that.”
