Blackburn try to beat clock to get transfer done in time to face Stoke City

Tony Mowbray is trying to ease his centre-back crisis with the signing of Jarrad Branthwaite in time for the visit of Stoke City this weekend.

Daniel Ayala (hamstring) is out until the end of January and Bradley Johnson has been used as a make shift defender, including in a 1-0 defeat at Stoke in December.

There are also injuries to Scott Wharton and Derrick Williams.

Now a loan move is close for Everton 18-year-old Branthwaite, who joined from Carlisle for £750,00 12 months ago, after his parent club weighed up the challenges ahead.

Mowbray hopes to get it all sealed and the player registered by 12pm on Friday in order to be available against Stoke.

LancsLive add: “Four Championship clubs have been named as having the highly rated defender on their radar this month.

“Bournemouth, Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday have all been credited with an interest in the national media, but Rovers and the Cherries are said to have been the front runners throughout.

“A stumbling block in negotiations has been Everton’s hesitancy in sanctioning a deal, with Premier League clubs concerned about squad depth in light of positive coronavirus tests and mounting injury issues.”

New signings Rhys Norrington-Davies and Rabbi Matondo are available to make league debuts for Stoke.
