Burglars target three Staffordshire businesses left empty due to coronavirus lockdown

Police officers are warning Staffordshire businesses to remain vigilant after three were burgled in less than 24 hours.

Officers from the East Staffordshire policing team took to social media to issue a stark warning to businesses currently closed due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic.

Boris Johnson last week ordered a number of non-essential businesses to close with even more sending employees to work from home due to the strict social distancing measures.

But officers now fear thieves are using the shutdown to target companies.

An East Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Unfortunately we’ve seen three burglaries to businesses across East Staffordshire take place in the past 24 hours as it seems criminals are taking advantage of the fact that many premises are empty due to Covid-19.

“As a business owner, you’ll have enough stress at this time, and we don’t want you to become a victim of crime.

“Ensure all premises are regularly checked to ensure the security of the building and try to identify any attempts to enter.

“If you spot anything, please drop us a DM or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
