Cheshire to move into coronavirus Tier 4 tonight

Cheshire is to head into the toughest Tier 4 restrictions tonight – along with most of England.

The county will effectively be back in lockdown with non-essential shops and leisure facilities closed from midnight.

Neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire will also be in Tier 4.

Action is being taken in an urgent bid to save lives and stop the under-pressure hospitals being overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

The news comes as Cheshire’s infection rate has been rising over the festive season.

Latest Public Health England figures show Cheshire East – which covers Congleton, Alsager, Crewe and Nantwich – had an infection rate of 238.4 per 100,000 in the seven days to December 24.

And Cheshire West had a case rate of 266.4.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We must act to suppress the virus now. The NHS is under very significant pressure. The threat to life from this virus is real.

“It is therefore necessary for large parts of the West Midlands to go into lockdown.”

Already nearly half of England are in the top Tier 4 – with an extra six million people moved there from Boxing Day.

The change means three quarters of the country are now in Tier 4.

What are the Tier 4 rules in England?

The Tier 4 rules will be essentially the same as the blanket lockdown that England was under in November.

  • Stay at home. You must not leave your home unless you have a  ‘reasonable excuse’ such as work, education, essential shopping or medical appointments
  •

  •  In general, you must not meet socially. However, you can exercise or meet in a public outdoor place with people you live with, your support bubble or with one other person
  •

  •  You must not meet indoors socially with any other household, unless part of your support bubble
  •

  •   Clinically extremely vulnerable people are advised not to work if they cannot work from home
  •

  •   All shops deemed non-essential by the Government must close

  •   Hairdressers and barbers must close
  •

  •   Indoor entertainment venues must close
