Coroner names Stoke-on-Trent man found dead on settee

A coroner has named a 50-year-old man who was found dead at his Stoke-on-Trent home.

Emergency services rushed to Ellerby Road, Blurton, after Jason Spooner was discovered by his support worker at 3.10pm on March 20.

But there was nothing paramedics could do to save him and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Now an inquest has been opened and adjourned into his death.

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Sarah Murphy said there is reason to suspect the death was unnatural.

She said: “He was found deceased by his support worker. There had been no answer and his support worker called the police. They declined to attend and said the support worker should enter the property to check on him.

“The support worker gained entry and found the deceased on the settee. He had last been spoken to by his support worker on March 11.

“There is reason to suspect the death was unnatural and an inquest will be necessary. The family will be updated in six weeks time on the progress of the investigation.

“A date for the inquest will be set administratively and the body has been released for funeral purposes.”

Paramedics had been called to the property following reports of a ‘medical emergency’.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 3.14pm on March 20 to reports of a medical emergency at a property on Ellerby Road, Blurton.

“One ambulance attended the scene and we discovered a man. Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
