Council announces closure of leisure centres and other buildings due to coronavirus



Leisure centres across Cheshire will close this afternoon due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Everybody Sport and Recreation – Cheshire East Council’s arms’-length charity – has announced all of the leisure centres will close at the end today (Friday, March 20).

The council says it is designed to prioritise the ‘health and wellbeing’ of customers and staff.

A spokesman said: “It is our priority to put the health and wellbeing of our customers and staff first above anything else.

“As you can expect these have been very uncertain and unpredictable times, we look to close until the end of April but we will continue to review the situation.

“As your local health and wellbeing Charity we have joined together with a number of our health and fitness partners to be able to help you to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle from home. “

The closure will affect the following sites:

  • Alsager Leisure Centre;
  • Crewe Lifestyle Centre – only sport activities;
  • Congleton Leiisure Centre;
  • Cumberland Sport Arena;
  • Holmes Chapel Community Centre;
  • Holmes Chapel Leisure Centre;
  • Nantwich Swimming Pool;
  • Sandbach Leisure Centre;
  • Shavington Leisure Centre.

Cheshire East has also revealed children’s centres in Sandbach, Alsager, Nantwich and The Brooks in Crewe will close as of Monday (March 23).

A spokesman added: “It is with the safety of children, families and staff in mind that the council has taken the decision to close down activity delivered from some of our children’s centres from Monday 23 March 2020, in an effort to minimise the spread of Covid-19/coronavirus within our communities.”
