Several dogs were seen being carried to safety after a Stoke-on-Trent woman died in a house fire.
Firefighters, police and paramedics rushed to Mallorie Road in Norton at around 11.20am this morning following reports of a fire at a property.
On arrival, crews found a woman in her 70s in the house but sadly nothing could be done to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A number of dogs were also found at the house and were carried to safety by emergency service personnel.
Staffordshire Police cordoned off the road to assist their colleagues dealing with the fire and it remained closed late into the afternoon as a fire investigation got underway.
A police spokesman said the circumstances surrounding the fire were not thought to be suspicious at this time.
He added: “We were called by colleagues at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to reports of a house fire on Mallorie Road in Norton at around 11.20am this morning.
“Officers attended to support the firefighters on scene. Sadly, a woman in her 70s was pronounced dead at the scene by colleagues at West Midlands Ambulance Service.
“A number of dogs were rescued from the scene. Inquiries are underway but the incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time.”
