Port Vale are down to 17th, just five points clear of the relegation zone, after they were thumped 4-0 at Mansfield.
Vale conceded inside the first minute, were 2-0 down at the break then had Leon Legge sent off before conceding two more.
Over to our fans’ panel..
Rob Rhead: “I thought last Saturday’s game was bad but this took it to another level. Do the management and playing staff realise they have taken us from play-off hopefuls to relegation contenders in a matter of weeks?
“Do they care because there don’t seem to be many who do? Some credit to John Askey for making the halftime changes he did after a dreadful first half but any real possibility of getting something from the game went with Leon Legge’s dismissal two minutes after the restart.
“It was a reckless, unnecessary challenge but he had been put under pressure by some terrible midfield play in front of him, and not for the first time.
“For a spell the three substitutes had a positive effect on the performance with the ten men playing better than the 11 in the first half.
“Not that that was difficult and it didn’t take long before the impetus was lost and Mansfield comfortably won their first home game of the season. A loss to Grimsby next week would plunge us deep into the relegation battle with games in hand for our rivals and, probably, the departure of the manager.
“Action may be taken before that if Carol and Kevin are the hard-nosed business people I suspect they are underneath.”
Steve Millward : “Horrendous.
“I’ve tried to remain balanced in my views until now but the lack of effort and poor discipline is too much to accept.
As much as I sympathise with the owners & the financial predicament they’re in, the time has come to make a change before it’s too late.”
Steve Lambourne: “I’m disappointed but not surprised because performances have been like this for a while now and I dread every game now because I can’t see us getting anything from it.”
Phil Sherwin : “This was a throughly dreadful performance. It was good for the first 45 seconds and then that was it. Once we went 1-0 down we never recovered – it got worse and worse.
“It’s worrying that this was against a team that hadn’t won at home in the league since February. It is a pretty dreadful state of affairs.
“Mansfield certainly didn’t look like a team that’s been struggling at home.
“Conditions were difficult but it was the same for them. Getting a player sent off early in the second half didn’t help but that wasn’t the reason we lost. We were beaten well before that.
“There are lot of things that have to happen in this transfer window.”
Dave Clay : “They are playing with attitude of ” oh well he’s gone soon”, as total lack of everything. Some of the basics we did wrong, I see county level and above doing right most games!
“They need a shock to system….and I agree with a mate, Micky Adams till the summer, he would get us organised and hard to beat.
“Then look at what the situation is like in May.”
Stephanie Walklate: “Absolutely dire, players look unfit and devoid of confidence. No creativity, reactive rather than proactive, too many silly mistakes. The list could go on..”
Steve Nixon : “Awful first half left us with a mountain to climb. That mountain got even bigger with Legge’s stupid challenge when he’d already been booked.
“Looked better second half. Rodney cannot play as a lone striker, the ball just comes straight back putting us under more pressure. “I’ve tried to be patient with Askey as he’s had a lot of our better players out over the last month or so but that patience is wearing very thin. Some of them are simply not good enough.”
