Driver banned for hitting speeds of 130mph through Staffordshire during lockdown

Driver Martin Corcoveanu has been banned from the roads after hitting speeds over 130mph through Staffordshire.

Corcoveanu was spotted travelling along the A5 in Lichfield at around 11.20am on May 5 during the first coronavirus lockdown.

He was driving a BMW 3-Series when spotted by officers from the specialist Staffordshire Police Road Policing Unit (RPU).

The major stretch of A5 through the county is a 70mph limit.

A Staffordshire Police investigation found Corcoveanu had been travelling in excess of 130mph and had run a red light at a roundabout.

The 27-year-old from Walsall has now been banned from driving for 20 months after admitting dangerous driving during a hearing at Cannock Magistrates Court.

Corcoveanu, of Walsall, was also handed a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

The officer in charge of the case, PC Craig Beardsley, of Staffordshire Police, said: “Corcoveanu clearly didn’t care about the danger he was putting himself and others in with his dangerous driving, at speeds of over 130mph.

“His actions were reckless and it is a miracle that nobody was seriously hurt or injured.”
