Engineers refuse to fix freezing tenant’s boiler – because she’s got coronavirus

Engineers are refusing to fix a disabled tenant’s boiler straight away – after she was struck down with coronavirus.

Laura Lewis reported the broken boiler to Your Housing on Sunday, January 10.

But she had tested positive for coronavirus three days earlier and engineers are not allowed to visit her Whiston property until she comes out of self-isolation and then provides a negative Covid-19 test.

Instead she has been given four oil heaters to try to keep her warm.

Wheelchair-user Laura has brittle bone syndrome, epilepsy, asthma, scoliosis and post-traumatic stress disorder. She says her boiler has been on the blink since November.

The 37-year-old said: “There are two leaks in the boiler and it keeps dropping pressure. The first time it went in November they left me 72 hours before anyone even came out to look at it.

“It then went again in December. They left it 24 hours before anyone came out to look at it. Now it has gone again.”

She added: “My bungalow is freezing even with the four heaters they have sent out. I’m having to stay in bed with the electric blanket on just to stay warm. With having Covid-19 I am constantly tired, I did nothing but sleep for the first five days for 18 hours a day.

“I am annoyed because the boiler should have been completely repaired back in November. The service is not good enough, I have been without heating and then to leave the heaters on the doorstep. They didn’t even arrange for them to be delivered when my personal assistant is here.

“I’m a wheelchair user and I can’t move them around. All they did was deliver them and I had to wait for my PA to put them together.

“My asthma is up and down so I have oxygen and other medication and the cold weather doesn’t help at all.

“I just want the boiler fixed – and fixed properly. It’s ridiculous.”

Your Housing has confirmed it has carried out three separate repairs to the boiler since November.

A Your Housing spokesman said: “The most recent visit was unable to go ahead as the resident had tested positive for Covid. We delivered four oil heaters to the address the same day, and once the self-isolation period has ended and they have a negative Covid test, we will get an engineer straight out to make sure the boiler is fully repaired.”
