PORT VALE

BROWN: Excellent.  Penalty stop to deny Henderson then made an even better save to keep out Wilson’s second-half header  8.5

CLARK: Solid defensively and dangerous going forward. Back in the form he showed on loan last season 8

LEGGE: Loses a mark for conceding the penalty but other than that was a commanding presence 7.5

SMITH: Good to see him back in the side – and straight back with his usual standards 8

FITZPATRICK: Solid from the left back given his chance back in the side 7.5

JOYCE: Back in the side and certainly justified that with his efforts in front of the back four 7

WHITEHEAD: Worked hard and always wanted the ball 6

CONLON: Not at his best creatively but another who worked tirelessly against a strong side 6

WORRALL: Clever header down for the goal. Maybe not at his best going forward but don’t dismiss the work he did defensively on the right 6.5

RODNEY: Started as the central striker in the 4-3-3 but was a little isolated at times, understandably so because the wide men were having to work so hard defensively  5.5

MONTANO: Took his goal well with an excellent volley. Worked hard on the left of the front three 7

SUBS:

ROBINSON (Rodney, 79)  Not on long but did plenty. Lively and had a hand in the move for the goal 7

BRISLEY (Whitehead, 94)  Not on long enough for a mark, but on long enough for a couple of important clearances

Subs: Crookes, Pope, Robinson, Brisley, Burgess, Visser.

SALFORD: Hladky, Golden, Eastham, Turnbull, Touray, Andrade (Asante, 61) Lowe, Gibson (Denny, 68), Hunter, Wilson, Henderson (Elliott, 89).

Subs: Evans, Clarke, Threlkeld, Armstrong.
