‘Eyesore’ former pub could soon be transformed into eight new homes


Plans have been unveiled to convert a former pub into eight ‘affordable’ houses.

A planning application has been submitted to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council to redevelop The Miners Rest in Froghall Road, Cheadle, into homes, with car parking.

The proposal is to create eight two-bedroom, semi-detached properties, and it is intended these will be purchased by a social landlord to offer affordable housing.

The pub has been described as an eyesore, and the design and access statement produced by Wyvern Partnership LLP of Crewe on behalf of the applicant, Nigel Wibberley of Stockwell Property Investments Ltd, claimed this development would improve the local area.

It said: “The proposals for the houses will fully integrate with adjacent residential properties and enhance the neighbourhood by improving the site from its current state of dereliction.

“The proposed development is in an existing residential environment that has safe and convenient access, accessible to local facilities.

“The proposal comprises the change of use from a former public house to eight residential two-bedroom houses.

“The site layout is based on a formal pattern which emphasises a street frontage along Froghall Road.

“This will create a visually interesting street scene and a distinct sense of place. The new dwellings have their own gardens to the rear and side and each has one designated parking space to the front.

“It is intended that the new houses are two storeys in height and will complement the dwellings in the immediate vicinity.

“They will make use of the same co-ordinated suite of external materials to give cohesion to the overall design and to be in keeping with existing development in the area.

A decision on the application is expected within eight weeks.
