Neighbours are fighting plans to revamp a car wash – after claiming the racket of horns, music and revving vehicles are disturbing their sleep.
They have lodged objections after Spotless Detailing submitted plans to refurbish its existing hand car wash at Swift Service Station, in Clayton Road, Clayton.
It follows similar complaints about a previous car wash operation on the same site.
But members of Newcastle Borough Council‘s planning committee are expected to approve the scheme at a meeting on Tuesday.
The objections have come from five households in nearby Mansfield Close.
In their objection, Linda and Gary Flynn said: “The site is in close proximity to residential dwellings. It has been impossible to use or enjoy our garden and conservatory area for many years.
“We can hear the noise in the bedrooms even with the windows closed. It disturbs sleep early in the mornings and constantly throughout the day affecting shift workers.”
Neighbour Zena Wedgwood says the previous operator caused ‘an excessive level of unacceptable noise, seven days a week’.
She added: “As the weather got warmer, naturally, as a family, we wanted to enjoy our garden and sit and relax outside and enjoy the warmer weather. This was absolutely impossible due to the persistent, constant and unbearable noise consistently coming from the car wash.
“Our sleep was also disturbed regularly in the early mornings from the operatives of the car wash which caused us more stress. This was having a significant and profound impact on our emotional wellbeing and mental health.”
Planning permission was first granted for a car wash on the site in 2005. The latest operation would run from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 4.30pm on Sundays.
The planning report states: “The current application is for a new hand car wash which would use an automated prewash system in place of the unenclosed jet wash compressor previously used. Site activities would also include jet washing of wheels with the compressor located within an enclosure and vacuuming of vehicle interiors.
“Subject to the imposition of conditions it is not considered that there would be any significant adverse impact on residential amenity.
“A noise impact assessment states that noise associated with the site and the previous hand car wash is already part of the character of the area.
“It asserts that noise levels would likely reduce compared to the previous operations as the previous operator located their associated jet wash compressor and vacuum at an exposed position. It concludes that there would be no significant noise impact at the nearest dwellings resulting from the new hand car wash operation.”
