‘Fantastic’ – Port Vale set new landmark with away support at Walsall

Port Vale’s away following at Walsall of 2,307 was their biggest for a league game this season.

The travelling support beats the 2,261 that travelled to Crewe to see Vale win November – and was the club’s largest league away support since 2,309 watched them at Crewe in August 2015.

Vale’s following was also easily the largest away following in League Two this weekend.

Manager John Askey said: “It is fantastic to stand on the sidelines and see so many there, and so vocal. It gives the players a lift, it gives everybody a lift.

“It must be great for them to be amongst it. It was really good to see that, but we have to make sure we perform to keep them and keep them singing. Hopefully we can do that until the end of the season.”

Vale’s biggest away following in any competition this season was at Manchester City in the FA Cup third round when 8,000 fans cheered the team on in a total crowd of 52,000.

Askey’s side looked like they might be celebrating victory when they twice took the lead at Walsall, through Leon Legge and Scott Burgess. However, Elijah Adebayo and Josh Gordon netted for the Saddlers who created enough chances to have won the hard-fought contest.

Vale have dropped two places to eighth, but are only outside the play-off places on goal difference ahead of Saturday’s home game with Scunthorpe.
