A gang tried to steal a 16-year-old boy’s bag after ramming him and his girlfriend with a bike and spitting on them in a terrifying attempted street mugging.
The victims were in Newcastle town centre when a group of teenagers – made up of two boys and three girls – turned nasty.
At one point they tried to make the young couple take off their shoes and force them to hand over a bag.
The ringleader also struck the boy with his bike and then spat on him for refusing to give into their demands.
The ordeal only came to an end when a member of staff at McDonald’s allowed the pair to take shelter inside.
Now police are investigating the incident, which happened in High Street shortly after 4pm on Sunday (December 20).
Sharing details of the incident on social media, the mother of the boy said: “These teenagers thought it would be fine to ram their push bike into my 16-year-old son and his girlfriend, try and demand they take their shoes off and also tried to demand my son hand over his bag and asking where are they from.
“Even worse spitting at them – vile creatures! This was by McDonald’s and they were sat on the market stalls about 4.30pm when I arrived.
“I’d like to thank the woman in McDonald’s who allowed them to sit in there to get away from them until I arrived. Apparently these people have been causing trouble most of the afternoon in the town.
“The police have taken my son’s jumper for forensics and are checking CCTV.”
Other shoppers who were intimidated by the group described them as ‘feral’.
One woman said: “I saw them arrive as we were packing up our stall. They came into town from the sunken roundabout end, making quite a noise then. You could tell they were looking for trouble.”
Staffordshire Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokesman said: “Officers were called on Sunday to reports that at a 16-year-old boy and a teenage girl had been threatened and struck with a bicycle in Newcastle.
