Five fire engines called to farm blaze in early hours

Firefighters tackled a hay fire at a North Staffordshire farm in the early hours of the morning.

Five fire crews were called to the blaze in Hollington at around 3.40am today.

The fire was in the open and involved around 80 tons of hay.

Firefighters from Longton, Cheadle, Ipstones and Uttoxeter managed to prevent it spreading to a farm outbuilding with another 50 tons of hay inside it.

Graham Mills, Head of Emergency Response at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Thanks to quick intervention and extremely good work from firefighters to isolate the building and creating a fire break, the outbuilding was protected.”

Eight fire engines are at the scene of a grass fire in Cannock Chase near Brocton this evening.  More here.
