Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel will have a medical at Stoke City today, claim Sky Sports.
The 33-year-old is a free agent following his departure from Trabzonspor in March.
His most recent spell in England came during the 2018-19 season with fellow Championship battlers Middlesbrough
Mikel made 19 appearances during that brief spell at the Riverside, scoring one, and was released at the end of the season.
An experienced head, the defensive midfielder counts glory in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup and African Cup of Nations amongst his biggest career honours.
Potters boss Michael O’Neill made clear his desire to add know-how to his ranks as he outlined his transfer window plans and with that his hope to get deals done quickly.
“We can’t fill our team with 20 or 21-year-olds. The Championship isn’t designed for that,” he said.
“It’s important we have the right type of players in the building, quality players.
“We have to do those kind of deals quickly,” he added.
Mikel’s arrival could be confirmed today by the club, should all go to plan during his medical examination, in a move that would make O’Neill’s fourth signing of the summer.
