Former Port Vale midfielder offered new deal as Swindon release four

Former Port Vale midfielder Anthony Grant has been offered a new contract by Swindon Town following the club’s promotion from League Two.

The Robins have published their retained list and are releasing Jacob Bancroft, Joe Romanski, Will Henry and Ralph Graham but offering new deals to 12 players.

They include Grant who is rated a player-of-the-year contender having been a mainstay of the team that win the title.

The 32 year old played in central defence because of injuries in his team’s 2-0 defeat at Vale Park in December, then was back in a midfield holding role in their 3-0 win over Vale at the County Ground in January.

The other players offered new deals are Zeki Fryers, Mathieu Baudry, Lloyd Isgrove, Luke McCormick, Ellis Iandolo, Keshi Anderson, Kaiyne Woolery, Jordan Lyden, Archie Matthews, Luke Haines and Eoin Doyle.

Grant was Port Vale’s player of the year in 2015/16, his first season at the club after a free-transfer from Crewe.

However, he left in January 2017 to Peterborough for around £100,000 – part of a costly transfer window for the Vale who also waved goodbye to Alex Jones and Jak Alnwick and plummeted to relegation in the second half of the season.

Swindon have won the 2019/20 League Two title on points per game average after the regular season was suspended in March and subsequently scrapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Crewe and Plymouth were also promoted automatically while the play-offs are being staged behind closed doors.

Exeter beat Colchester and Northampton overcame Cheltenham to reach the final.
