Former Stoke City defender finds new club 10,000 miles away after non-league spell

Former Stoke City centre-back Ryan Shotton has found a new club – more than 10,000 miles away.

Shotton has joined up with Melbourne Victory in Australia after being released by Middlesbrough in the summer.

The 32-year-old had been playing locally for non-league outfit Leek Town but now continues his professional career Down Under.

“I’m very pleased to have signed with Melbourne Victory. It’s a club which has been very successful, has a huge fanbase and I can’t wait to get there,” Shotton told Victory’s official website.

“After speaking with (head coach) Grant Brebner, he outlined a very clear vision about the football he wants the team and myself to play, so that made the decision to come to Victory very easy.

“I’ve obviously played with Rudy Gestede as well (at Boro), so I’m looking forward to linking up with him and all my new teammates. As a team we want to play exciting football, win games for the members & fans and help get the club back up the table.”

Brebner is thrilled to bring in Shotton, not only for his experience and battle-hardened defensive abilities, but also his threat from set-pieces.

“Ryan has performed and competed in the toughest league in the world, the English Premier League,” Brebner said.

“He brings a wealth of experience to our group, is a fierce competitor and will also help mentor our emerging players.

“While Ryan has made a career playing in defence, given his height and strength in the air he can push forward for set pieces and is a real threat around goal.”

Shotton could make his competitive debut for Victory when they take on Brisbane Roar in the first fixture of the new A-League season on January 2.

Shotton made 70 appearances for Stoke between 2007 and 2015 after coming through the club’s academy.
