Funny or offensive? – Stoke City fans react to James McClean controversy

So what do we make of James McClean’s picture on Instagram?

Pictured wearing a black balaclava, with all the paramilitary undertones that go with it, he was sat in front of his children with the words: `Todays school lesson – History’ followed by a laughing emoji.

Fans have taken to our Facebook page to react and here’s a selection of what they have been saying about the Stoke City winger who has now been punished by the club…

David Broome: A leopard never changes his spots. Goodbye.

Mark Doth Copeland: I actually like the guy, but after the fines and stuff being handed out to football clubs for the racist chanting against him, what sort of discipline should he / is he going to face for this? It’s a joke gone very wrong at the very least.

Adam Allcock: Its HUMOUR! He grew up in Derry, its affected HIS life! He has experienced things none of us can imagine, and he was having a laugh!

Sean Lewis: His political views are up to him, as long as he gives 100% on the pitch for Stoke thats all that matters for me.

Dan Jones: Could possibly be classed as “bringing the club into disrepute” due to him being a player, grounds to terminate his contract if the club wanted to.

Owen Barratt: You all know his views. Stop being a snowflake.

James Worth: I see people are also self isolating from a sense of humour.

Wez Latocha: What an absolute b*** end! Crying to the FA about racist abuse! Embarrassment to our club get rid.

Wendy Wright: Shame on him, this isn’t funny.

Tony Boddie: Idiotic is the word I use here.

Mark Barnsley: I actually hoped it was going to be fake …but it wasn’t, get him out of our club …… he can’t help himself, he was probably in the best position at the club since his arrival it was pretty quiet on the political front, but he goes and does this… get gone.
