Furious neighbours object after developer building new housing estate asks for 10-hour construction shifts on Saturdays


Families are set to win their fight against plans to carry out construction work on a new housing estate for 10 hours on Saturdays.

Developers already have permission to build up to 55 homes on land off Eccleshall Road, in Loggerheads.

But they claim the original conditions imposed by Newcastle Borough Council are ‘far too restrictive’.

Plant Developments has now applied to vary them.

Its initial request would have seen the conditions extended by five hours on Saturdays, enabling construction crews to be on site and make deliveries between 8am and 6pm. The existing rules mean they have to finish by 1pm.

The company also asked for the Monday to Friday hours to be extended until 6pm from the current 4pm time limit.

But after objections from residents – who claimed their weekends would be blighted by noise – the Saturday changes look set to be scrapped.

Jill Worrall, from Kestrel Drive, in Loggerheads, was among those to write a letter in protest.

She said: “This is a quiet area of woodland which is much appreciated and used by both local residents and the surrounding population. Asking for some reasonable respite from the noise is not unreasonable.”

The borough council’s planning committee will discuss the application at a meeting tonight.

Planning officers have worked with the applicant to come up with an alternative and councillors will vote on this plan at the meeting. It would see the longer construction hours approved on weekdays, but the 8am to 1pm limit on Saturdays remain unchanged.

Adrian Goodgrove, from Partridge Rise, in Loggerheads, has described the move as a ‘suitable compromise’.

He said: “While I understand the need to maximise working time during the working week, it is inconsiderate to those who live nearby to extend this further into a weekend.”

A report to the planning committee states: “There are residential properties adjacent to, directly opposite, and to the rear of the site.

“The reason for the imposition of the condition was to protect the amenity of residents during the construction phase of the development.”
