Tributes have been following in for a Stoke-on-Trent NHS worker who died after contracting coronavirius.
Sylvia Tideswell, a nursing assistant at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, lost her fight for life on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25).
The 60-year-old, who lived in Oakhill nearly her whole life, had dedicated 17 years to caring for patients on the elderly care wards.
Now StokeonTrentLive readers have left dozens of heartfelt messages to Sylvia who they described as a ‘true hero’.
Sylvia Carville said: “It’s so sad your life was lost through helping others. Words cannot express the admiration and respect we have for you. We’re thinking of your family at this time. Rest in peace brave lady.”
Grace Bateman-Harris said: “I grew up with Sylvia and her brothers and sisters. I’m so sad to hear this. Love and condolences to all the family.”
Emma McKellar said: “She was a wonderful nurse, very kind, understanding and she cared for every patient with compassion and love. RIP hero.”
Kerry Bailey added: “Our beautiful Sylvia, words can’t describe how much we all miss you. Forever in our hearts.”
Nora Bean said: “It’s such sad news. My heartfelt love goes to Sylvia’s family and colleagues and also thanks for her contribution in the frontline at Royal Stoke. It’s so so sad that she lost her life while fighting for us all.”
And Paul Hollis added: “Rest in peace Sylvia, one of our heroes. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this sad fine.”
Sylvia leaves behind two daughters, Sarah and Kerry, and a son Martyn, as well as three grandchildren Chris, Jake and Jordan.
Ward manager Jenny McClatchy said Sylvia would be remembered fondly.
She added: “Sylvia was one of those people who would sneak onto the ward at the start of a shift and just get on with the job.
“She was quietly efficient and kind and was great with staff and patients who would turn to her for a chat.
“She had a good sense of humour and kept us laughing with some brilliant one liners. She was extremely well-loved and will be missed by all her colleagues on the ward.”
Sylvia is the second nurse to die at UHNM during the pandemic.
The grandad-of-five – who was known as Paddy – had previously worked at North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.
The 60-year-old contracted coronavirus and was pronounced dead at Royal Stoke on April 19.
