History suggests Stoke City need just two wins and a draw to survive

Stoke City only need another seven points to avoid relegation, history suggests.

Stoke are currently in trouble with 39 points to their name, just one above the relegation zone.

Another seven points though would push the club past the total number of points usually required to stay in the league.

Clubs finishing 22nd in the Championship in seasons when there have been 24 teams in the league have done so with an average of 46.4 points since three points for a win was introduced in 1981/82.

That’s seven more than the Potters have now, the equivalent to two wins and a draw.

There have been seasons when Michael O’Neill ‘s side wouldn’t need anywhere near that amount though.

The clubs who finished 22nd in 2018/19 (Rotherham), 2015/16 (Charlton) and 2011/12 (Portsmouth) did so with just 40 points meaning 41 would’ve been enough to survive in those seasons.

Another two sides finished 22nd with 41 (Barnsley in 2017/18 and Millwall in 2014/15), while another five finished there with 42 points.
