SUSPENSIONS

With the deadline now passed for a suspension for five yellow cards, it means O’Neill’s squad are now off any sort of disciplinary tightrope.

INJURIES

Thibaud Verlinden

Injury: Knee

Last match played: Stoke City 0-2 Preston, Wednesday February 12

Potential return date: Unknown

The 20-year-old had only been on the pitch for five minutes against North End, before going down with a knee injury. It has since been confirmed he has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will be out until the summer.

He told fans: “It’s with a lot of sadness that I have to write this message to say that yesterday’s game was my last game of the season.

“It’s not an easy injury but I promised myself, my family and the fans that I will recover from this and come back stronger!”

James McClean

Injury: Knee

Last match played: Stoke City 0-2 Preston, Wednesday February 12

Potential return date: Unknown

As Verlinden was ruled out for the season, McClean suffered his own knee injury. O’Neill confirmed it was a knee issue: “I took him (McClean) off because he had hurt his knee in the first half in a tackle on the far side, and he did it again chasing a ball down in the corner.”

The winger then gave an update on his situation, posting a picture of his leg in a brace.

It is understood he has suffered medial ligament damage and faces weeks on the sidelines, although should return for the Championship run-in.

Stephen Ward

Injury: Back.

Last match played: Fulham 1-0 Stoke City, Sunday December 29

Potential return date:  Unknown.

Ward had been nursing this injury for a little while and the 34 year-old was clearly struggling ahead of his substitution shortly before half-time at Craven Cottage.

Ryan Shawcross

Injury:  Calf strain

Last match played:  Fulham 1-0 Stoke City, Sunday December 29

Potential return date: Unknown.

“He’s in the hands of the medical team and when he’s handed over to us it’s important he’s 100 per cent fit,” O’Neill stressed.

“We maybe took a bit of a risk with him in the initial bit, because the original injury is not the injury keeping him out.

“Ryan wants to play a big part between now and the end of the season, but he also has to be 100 per cent fit.”
