PLAYER RATINGS

BROWN: Didn’t have any actual saves to make but that’s not to downplay his role in organising from behind the back four   6

GIBBONS: Started the build up by revealing he’s close to signing a new deal, finished the week with a sound performance to show why Vale want to keep him  7

LEGGE: Continues to impress. Bailed out the team with a  difficult clearing header after May lobbed the ball goalwards. Looked a bit lucky not to get a second yellow card after the break 7

SMITH: Tom Pope predicted Smith and Legge would thrive against a Cheltenham side who like to put balls into the box. He was spot on. 7

CLARK: Impressive return to the side at left back, even though he was denied a penalty – eventually 7

JOYCE: Kept Vale ticking in front of the back four. Avoided the booking which would have taken him to ten and meant a two game ban. He’s now reached the 37 game cut off point so the slate is wiped clean.  7

BURGESS: Always looking to get forward and slip in clever though balls to the wide men or the striker. Never stops running 7

CONLON: One of his best games in a Vale shirt. Got forward and used the ball well. 8

AMOO: Set Cullen up for a second half chance and went close himself with an effort just wide 7

CULLEN: Unlucky with a first half header against the bar and a second half header well saved 7

WORRALL: Not quite at his best but it was his excellent cross from which Cullen hit the bar early on 7

SUBS:

POPE (Cullen, 70) Came close to winning it with a diving header but the angle was just too tight 6

BROWNE (Amoo, 78) Will be hoping for longer but lively while he was on. Set up a late chance after winning possession wide on the left   6

Not used: Crookes, Oyeleke, Atkinson, Bennett, Maddison

Cheltenham: Evans, Long, Hussey, Raglan, Thomas (Doyle-Hayes, 59), Reid (Smith, 76), Broom, Sheaf (Ince, 59), Boyle, Greaves, May.

Subs: Clements, Debayo, Lovett, Nichols.
