Late-night shopping has been scrapped at Stoke-on-Trent’s biggest shopping centre.
Businesses received the news in a letter from shopping centre bosses yesterday.
The centre had been due to open for an extra two hours – until 8pm – tonight.
But that is now not happening and the complex will shut at 6pm.
It comes as the coronavirus pandemic has already led to the closure of Cineworld within The Hive.
An intu Potteries spokesman said: “In light of the latest Government advice and in consultation with our brands, we have adjusted our centre opening hours to allow individual retailers, restaurants and leisure facilities to reduce their opening hours.
“We are focused on supporting the brands that operate in our centres by providing them with greater flexibility, while also serving our communities and ensuring people have access to important services and essential items.
“These are unprecedented circumstances and we are doing our best to operate key services in a safe and sensible way.
“Precautionary measures are in place across all our sites and we would encourage everyone to use the hand sanitisers and cleansing wipe stations that have been installed throughout our centres. We’re also deep cleaning high footfall areas much more regularly.
“We are following the official guidance very carefully and doing everything we can to support our employees in these challenging times.”
On the Cineworld closure, the spokesman added: “We know that Cineworld has taken the precautionary decision to temporarily close its cinemas, as part of its response to coronavirus. As part of that decision we understand that Cineworld at intu Potteries will close until further notice. We continue to liaise closely with them and are in regular contact.”
It is a further blow for intu Potteries after Carphone Warehouse – which has a unit in the centre – this week announced plans to close its 531 stand-alone stores from April 3.
An intu spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear that Carphone Warehouse is closing down at intu Potteries. This is a commercial decision taken by Carphone Warehouse. We wish their staff well.”
