Stoke City fans have been reacting to the news that midfielder Joe Allen is set to make his return to the pitch.
The Welshman has been out of action since March, after suffering an Achilles tendon rupture in the final game before the first national lockdown.
Allen has been stepping up his recovery from the injury in recent weeks, with Michael O’Neill now revealing that he is set to play for the U23s this week vs West Bromwich Albion .
“Joe will play for the 23s on Monday – he’ll get some minutes and hopefully that will be the final part of his build-up,” the Stoke boss said.
“We’ve got to give him time. We’re not going to throw him straight back in and see the Joe Allen that we know, although we don’t think that’s far away.”
Allen’s return will come as a welcome boost to Stoke, and fans have shown their excitement at the news on social media.
Here is what some had to say.
Russell Dutton: This is the best news coming out of MON interview yesterday. Come through without any reaction Joe what an asset to bring into the team in Jan, like a signing. Make no mistake no club in the championship will bring a player that good into their team for the rest of the season
Jeremy Leese: A huge lift for all Stokies (bar one!) to see Allen so close to a return. His experience, energy and leadership, added to Mikel and Clucas, will really help in the new year.
SpenceWright2406: People have forgot how good he is since he got injured
Stokie’73: Let’s hope everything goes well in the u23 games, and he rapidly gets back to being selectable for the first team.
His presence in the playing squad would be a welcome boost.
Ratty: Wow! It will be like a new signing if all goes well!
