Lived a life we haven’t experienced – Stoke City fans on how controversial winger is now viewed

Where does James McClean now lie in the affections of most Stoke City supporters?

There has undoubtedly been a shift thanks to his form and, perhaps, thanks to a more generous understanding of his Republican views.

We asked fans on our Facebook page to give us their opinion of McClean now and whether it had changed substantially.

Here’s a selection of your replies…

Carl William Bailey: On the pitch the lad gives his all. However like the Sentinel says he has curbed down on his Social media posts. There was no announcement about the Poppy as it’s his right not to wear it despite me not agreeing the reasons why. Keep doing the business though UTMP.

David Dunn: Gives 100%. Far better winger than Ince. More goals, more assists, better tracking back etc etc. His views about the conflicts in Ireland, well he was on the other side to us, but he has seen his friends, family etc suffer at the hands of British soldiers, so he has lived a life that we haven’t experienced or could ever imagine

Adam Allcock: Proper turn round from me. My wife is from Derry, so that’s never been an issue for me (it wouldnt have been if she wasn’t from there either), but I just didnt think he was a good enough a player to warrant a £6m fee at his age. Proved me wrong completely and first name on the team sheet this season. Player of the season for me hands down.

Mike Brindley: I’ve always rated him. He’s always given 100% while being at Stoke City. He is my favourite player at Stoke today.

His views are his views, from a life that only he has lived, in a place called home. And knowing that, he proudly stands by it. To me, that’s fair enough, it’s only political if people choose to make it so.

Dan P Millward: First had an issue with his views. Still do, but it has nothing to do with football. On the pitch he has been nothing but a model professional and at times has dragged us by the scruff of the neck through games.

Dawn Holmes: I’ve always liked and rated him, he does so much for charity which he doesn’t broadcast like others

Chris Winfield: It’s a little shallow of people changing their views of McClean now he’s scoring more goals and playing well. This lad, love him or hate him, gives 100% week-in-week-out. If Stoke had had more James McCleans in the last 18months we wouldnt find ourselves in the state we find ourselves in. Just because someone doesn’t wear a poppy doesn’t make them a bad person or bad footballer.

Tim Griff: As a player he’s given 100%, all I care about..

Scott Dennis: Never doubted his ability on field….always gives his all…as for his personal views…they are his and he does not let us down on the field.

Sarah Beanz Sproston: Never doubted this person or his family, he is a inspiration in all aspects.

Mark James: As a footballer yes, not as a person I’m afraid

Craig Willis: This guy has been class

Martin Peters: As a player he’s an average Walters, as a person nope

Geir Ove Pettersen: Fantastic character and moral.

Andrew Rushton: Liked him from the start.

Peter J Cartwright: Totally committed.

Geir Meltveit: Still one of my favourites. Gives all.

Jeff Hallam: Footballer yes, person no.

Zeon Bagnall: A true Stokie.
