Look at your phone – how Stoke City defender was told of Manchester United link

Nathan Collins may only be 18, but he’s been here before.

Yesterday’s story saying Manchester United had their eye on him ahead of a possible summer move certainly has echoes of events last summer.

He was linked to an unlikely move to Old Trafford then after stories said former Stoke City team-mate Darren Fletcher had put in a good word about him at United.

When we caught up with him at a pre-season training camp in Holland he was seemingly taking everything in his stride.

“They were a bit unexpected to he honest,” the Irish youth international said of the stories.

“I woke up one morning and I didn’t have a clue.

“My brother ran into me and said, ‘Quick, look at your phone.’ I had a look and seen all this with Darren Fletcher.

“I couldn’t believe it when I first saw it and it kept going and going.

“I think some players it could (turn your head), but it didn’t really bother me or effect me. I knew I had to come back to Stoke and come back in good form fitness wise.

“It’s just rumours and I didn’t get my hopes up, I always knew I was coming back here.”
