Port Vale fans haven’t been able to watch their team in action since March, but that hasn’t stopped them raising money for their club.
In fact, The Supporters’ Club’s appeal to help finish the Lorne Street Stand has broken the £10,000 barrier.
That’s remarkable considering the supporters’ club has taken a step back from promoting the appeal during the last couple of months because they felt fans understandably had other priorities during lockdown.
But they are overwhelmed by supporters’ generosity as fans have continued to back the appeal via the gofundme page.
That adds to the backing fans are also giving Vale’s owners Carol and Kevin Shanahan by committing to season tickets for the 2020/21 campaign.
More than 1,400 fans have bought their tickets – and Vale are also grateful to supporters who have contacted them to say they won’t be asking for a refund from their 2019/20 tickets for the games that couldn’t be played.
As for the Lorne Street Stand appeal, that was created by fans at the end of February to raise funds towards creating a concourse in the unfinished part of the Lorne Street Stand.
Money raised will be given to the club to help towards estimated costs of more than £100,000.
The owners have put permanent seats into the stand – originally for the Robbie Williams charity concert which had to be postponed because of lockdown.
But while they don’t need a concourse for that event, one would be required to regularly open that half of the stand for football games.
The Lorne Street Stand was opened twenty years ago but the half of the stand closest to the Hamil end has remained unfinished.
Phil Potts, of the Vale Supporters Club said: “As the Supporters’ Club treasurer, I monitor this appeal daily. We got off to a flying start raising over £8,500 in the first 10 days (£9k in the first month).
“Then Covid struck and donations, understandably, slowed dramatically. In the last month, however, it’s picked up again.
“That’s quite amazing since a lot of season ticket holders are waiving their rights to refunds (and buying tickets for next season!) some fans have even donated on gofundme multiple times. All I can say is a massive thank you on behalf of the Supporters Club…but please…keep it coming!”
