A lorry driver has been taken to hospital following a collision that has closed a North Staffordshire road in both directions this morning (Friday April 24).
His lorry hit a tree and overturned near Smithy Lane on the A53, in Whitmore, at around 4am.
The road remains closed and a diversion is in place.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 3.56am to the A53 near Smithy Lane in Whitmore to reports of a lorry that had overturned and gone through a hedge hitting a tree.
“One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended. We treated one patient, a man, the driver of the lorry for injuries not believed to be life threatening.
“He was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.”
Confirming the closure this morning, traffic monitoring company Inrix stated: “A53 closed due to accident, a lorry involved between Common Lane (Baldwins Gate) and Three Mile Lane (Whitmore).
“Road has been closed since 04:00. Recovery has been arranged but the road is not expected to re-open until late Friday morning.”
