Inrix, the traffic data company reports the Northbound carriageway is closed and there is slow traffic due to an accident involving a lorry and a car between J12 A5 (Gailey) and J13 A449 (Stafford South).
The traffic is also being held on the opposite side of the M6 Southbound due to the smoke reducing visibility.
The closure was put in place at around 12.55pm and emergency services are currently tackling the fire.
Thankfully there have been no injuries.
Diversion – follow the Hollow Black Triangle Symbol via the exit at J12, onto the A5 Westbound which is looking slow. Then, at Gailey, head onto the A449 Northbound through Penkridge, to rejoin the M6 at J13.
A Central Motorway Police Group spokesman said: “We are currently dealing with a car and HGV fire on the M6 between junction 12 and 13 at Stafford.
“Please find an alternative route, possibly A449 through Penkridge, northbound delays will be lengthy.
“Thankfully no injuries, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Highways England are working hard to get the carriageway moving, if you are stuck in the tailbacks we thank you for your patience.”
