A woman is being quizzed by police today after a van driver was seen swerving and crashing into a car on the M6 before fleeing from the vehicle.
Officers with the North West Motorway Police were responding to a blow out incident on the northbound carriageway in Cheshire in the early hours of this morning when the collision occurred.
An Astra van had moved across from lane four to allow police to pass, before inexplicably hitting their brakes, swerving across lanes and colliding with another vehicle.
The driver of the van then exited the vehicle and made off on foot. Officers carried out a search of the area and quickly located the driver, who subsequently failed a roadside drug-drive test.
A woman was then arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs and taken into custody.
A North West Motorway Police spokesman tweeted about the incident: “Whilst responding to a wagon with a blow out in the live lane of the All Lanes Running M6N, the driver of an Astra van moved across from lane four to allow the police vehicle by, but then for whatever reason decided to slam on the brakes and swerve across the road to a stop in the running lane, hitting a member of the public in the process.
“The driver of this van then got out and ran! Extra police patrols arrived and after a short search the driver was found and arrested. The driver also failed a drug drive test.
“She can now have a think about what she’s done in our fabulous hotel, before answering some questions in the morning.
“The driver of the other car is shook up, but OK, and has continued on their journey.”
