M6 lorry fire: Watch the dramatic moment cans of fruit explode as motorway closed for hours

This was the dramatic moment cans of fruit exploded from the back of a lorry engulfed in flames on the M6.

The motorway was closed in both directions yesterday afternoon after the lorry – carrying hundreds of tins of fruit – burst into flames between junction 14 for Stafford North and junction 15 for Hanchurch

Highways England closed the M6 in both directions for a number of hours due to safety concerns.

A Highways England spokesman said: “The vehicle that has caught fire is carrying canned fruit which is popping due to the heat and has the potential to hit any passing vehicles.”

The northbound carriageway was closed overnight and into this morning and a diversion was put in place so that resurfacing work could be completed.

The motorway has now reopened.
