Man arrested on suspicion of arson after family forced to flee Stoke-on-Trent home

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of arson following a number of fires in a Stoke-on-Trent town during the coronavirus lockdown – one of which forced a family to flee their home.

Samantha Worrall and her son Finley Derbyshire escaped from their home in Leonard Street, Burslem, after a fire spread from a neighbour’s shed to her kitchen roof at around 12.30am on March 31.

Just an hour later, firefighters were called out to a garage blaze in nearby Macclesfield Street – with police believing both fires were started deliberately and were both linked.

Now a 50-year-old Stoke-on-Trent man has been taken into custody in relation to the incidents.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers have arrested a 50-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent on suspicion of arson following a number of recent fires in Burslem.

“He has been released on conditional bail as inquiries continue.”

Samantha, aged 32, and six-year-old Finley had to break the social distancing rules and stay with her parents while the damage caused by the blaze was assessed.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 29 of March 31.
