Massive beer garden with bar and BBQ opens behind Indian restaurant


The owner of one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most popular restaurants has opened another eaterie – and it’s already attracted a Government minister.

Kishore Jammula has built up a very strong reputation in the Potteries with his Mirchi restaurant in Shelton.

During lockdown, in June last year, he decided to expand and took over Oh! India in Hanford. And in July this year, he opened Back Yard, a stylish beer garden behind the Mayne Street venue, with a bar and barbecue room.

Opening night guests included Home Secretary Priti Patel and Stoke-on-Trent South MP Jack Brereton.

Now Kishore and his 14-strong team have been wowing diners ever since with their impressive range of mouth-watering dishes.

Kishore, aged 40, said: “Oh! India has a similar menu to Mirchi, but Mirchi concentrates on south Indian food and Oh! India specialises more in north Indian food.”

The restaurant has a capacity of 140 and Back Yard can accommodate 72.

Kishore said: “We have had a revamp inside. We changed everything and it has a plush new interior.

Oh! India in Hanford has launched ‘Back Yard’, a barbecue and beer garden.

“As well as the food, we sell coffees, ice creams and cocktails.

“We also have a function room.

“Outside, we have a bar with a barbecue room and seating for 72. When the weather is good, it is usually busy.

“We have had a superb response to Back Yard from customers. Last Tuesday, we had nobody in the restaurant, Wednesday the same, as everybody was outside enjoying themselves.”

The Back Yard barbecue menu includes the Grill Sampler at £12.95 and the Backyard Special Grill at £21.95 which includes highway chicken tikka, Punjabi chicken wings, lamb sheek kebab, mix veg pakora, Achari lamb chops and fish koliwada.

There is also a range of small plates and sides.

Back Yard customers can also order from the restaurant menu.

Kishore added: “A lot of my customers from Mirchi have been coming and they love it.

“We have draft beer including Cobra and Carling in the outside bar and the customers can watch the chefs cooking in a live kitchen.

“Next year, we will extend our opening hours and open at lunchtimes.”

Head chef Avinash Kumar who has worked in the area for 15 years, including at the Ramada Hotel, Clayton, and bet365.

The 45-year-old said: “It has been going really well. We have a very good team. We enjoy the variety of cooking the big meals and the barbecue food. “

Customer Julian Lewis, aged 52, from Newcastle, said: “The food is excellent. It is quality. The barbecue is excellent.

“There is a good vibe. The service is excellent and the staff are very friendly. It is a really good concept. Back Yard is a great venue for summer get-togethers and it has been very popular in the summer months.”

Oh! India and Back Yard are open 5pm to 10,30pm ,Tuesdays to Sundays, and closed on Mondays.
