Meet the man who brought his town together to volunteer during lockdown

From rallying volunteers to delivering food and medication, Jamie Evans has been bringing the people of Cheadle together to help others during the pandemic.

The local councillor and support worker quickly realised the coronavirus crisis would be particularly hard for elderly residents who would have to self-isolate for months.

The dad-of-five said: “I decided to take a co-ordinated approach and created the Cheadle Staffs Volunteer page on Facebook so that I could organise our volunteers and create links across the town with places like the local supermarket and the doctor’s surgery.

“They were even giving out our numbers to people that they thought might be vulnerable.

“At the start I was a bit worried that with everything going on, there may be people who wanted to take advantage of the situation and try to scam or rob some of our residents.

Jamie Evans has been a Cheadle councillor for just over a year

“I know that some residents also shared these concerns, so I made sure that every volunteer had a signed letter from myself so that people knew they were legitimate.

“As soon as I set the page up, people really wanted to help. I was being contacted by people who needed help and people who wanted to help, as well as people sharing the post to their friends and family members. We had around 200 posters up all over Cheadle. I didn’t expect the reaction at all.”

The 37-year-old has been a councillor for a year, and says his love of the town and its people is his motivation.

He added: “It was really disappointing when we realised we wouldn’t be able to celebrate VE Day properly. We still wanted to celebrate so we had the national toast at 3pm and then we set up a live stream on Facebook throughout the day so that different people could put on entertainment. Everyone seemed to love it.

“A lot of my neighbours were planning barbecues so we all just decided to do them around the front of the house instead so we could see each other.”

Now Jamie has been nominated for an Our Heroes Award in the Good Neighbour category.
