Midfielder ‘set to join’ Stoke City despite Celtic and Rangers offers

Charlton midfielder Alfie Doughty is ‘set to join’ Stoke City despite interest from Scottish Premiership sides Celtic and Rangers.

The Potters have had a bid, believed to be in the region of £650,000 accepted by Charlton alongside QPR and Bournemouth.

The winger has just six months left on his contract at the Valley, prompting reported interest from both Celtic and Rangers.

But it now seems that the player has made a decision over where his future lies.

According to Herald and Times Sport, Doughty has chosen to move to Stoke City this January despite receiving pre-contract offers from the Scottish giants.

The report claims that both Celtic and Rangers made offers to the player, with talks being able to start when the January window opened.

Doughty is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return to action until the end of next month.

Should he complete his move to Stoke, it has been confirmed by Charlton boss Lee Bowyer that the player is likely to return to the Addicks on loan.

“Part of the deal is that Alfie will be coming back on loan,” he said.

“Alfie himself has said he has started the season with us and he’d like to finish it. He wants to be part of trying to help us finish as high as possible, which is good.

“I imagine he will get fit and then whichever club gets him will send him back on loan to us until the end of the season. Then he’ll go back to wherever he goes.”
