Namibia all-rounder joins NSSCL Premier Division side Bagnall Norton

Bagnall Norton have recruited Namibia international Christi Viljoen for the 2021 North Staffs and South Cheshire League season.

All-rounder Viljoen is no stranger to the NSSCL having previously had a two-season stint with Burslem in 2016 and 2017.

He was supposed to figure for Blythe last summer, but the shortened campaign because of the coronavirus pandemic saw overseas players unable to take part in the competition.

And Premier Division Bagnall Norton have now made their move to strengthen their resources by signing the 33-year-old.

Viljoen certainly made his mark with Burslem, scoring 1,250 runs and taking 117 wickets with his seam.

He has played two one-day internationals and 12 T20s for Namibia, as well as boasting a wealth of experience in the professional game.

Viljoen has been playing for Otago, where his team-mates include New Zealand international Hamish Rutherford.

In total, Viljoen has figured in 80 first-class, 89 List A and 76 Twenty20 matches in his domestic career.

His first season with Burslem ended with success as they were crowned NSSCL Division One champions.

He struck three centuries during his time at Festival Heights, with an unbeaten 159 in a win at Betley being his top contribution with the bat.

Viljoen claimed 12 five-wicket hauls in the NSSCL, with best figures of 6-20 against Ashcombe Park in 2017.

Bagnall Norton finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2020 after winning two and losing nine of their 11 matches.

However, it provided a great learning curve for Justin Mould and his players after they had secured three successive promotions to rise from Division Three to the top flight.

They have been busy adding to their squad for next season with Whitmore’s Joe Bridgewater and Longton’s Freddie Doorbar already making the move to the club.
