It’s no great surprise that Nathan Smith’s future is still up in the air.
I know Nathan hadn’t indicated whether he would be staying or going by this week – a month after the deal was offered as part of the retained list.
But things are going to take longer this summer.
That doesn’t mean he’s definitely leaving but it’s fair enough for him to want to see what other options are out there. In most years, things would have been sorted out by now but this isn’t most years and so many clubs still won’t know their plans for next season.
The Championship are only just restarting their season and League One have still got to play the play-offs. So there are plenty of clubs who don’t know what division they will be in, and plenty of others who aren’t sure yet what funds they will have for the 20/21 season.
I haven’t spoken to Nathan about his future, he plays his cards close to his chest anyway.
But I can see why he would he taking a bit longer to make his mind up. From Vale’s point of view, they’ll want to know one way or the other but I think will wait a bit longer rather than give an ultimatum.
Vale will want to keep hold of him because he’s been such a big player for us. Considering the current circumstances, I think the club will give him more time.
While we wait to hear on that one, it’s good news that David Amoo, Shaun Brisley, Rhys Browne, Tom Conlon, Mark Cullen and Cristian Montano have all indicated they are going to sign.
We have had a good season and are a close knit group so it’s great to be keeping the majority of the squad together. If we can add three or four fresh faces to improve us again then we will be in good shape.
