NCCA day two, tea report: Staffordshire collapse as Norfolk fight back

Staffordshire’s hopes of building a commanding lead on the second day of their clash with Norfolk hit the buffers in the afternoon session.

Staffs had established an 80-run first-innings advantage… but suffered a nightmare afternoon as they crumbled to 71-6 at tea.

That saw them lead by 151, but they would have been hoping for significantly better in the NCCA Division One East game at Manor Park.

Staffordshire had made their way to 17-0 before the Norfolk fightback started in earnest.

Alex Mellor was caught behind by Tom New off Brett Stolworthy for three, while the same combination accounted for Matthew Morris (15) to leave Staffs 18-2.

Michael Hill was bowled by Callum Metcalf for 14 and captain Peter Wilshaw was dismissed by the same bowler as he looped a catch to Will Rogers at square leg.

Those setbacks left Staffordshire on 59-4 – and their predicament became even worse as tea approached.

Zen Malik was trapped lbw by spinner Ash Watson for 23 – the ball keeping lower than he anticipated – while Jack Redman fell to the final ball of the session as Charlie Rogers pinned him in front.

Staffordshire will now be looking at their lower order to add priceless runs to help them towards a decent lead.
