Newcastle United linked with move for Stoke City favourite

Nick Powell has reportedly attracted an inquiry from Newcastle United following his consistent performances for Stoke City.

The 26-year-old has been a leading figure for Michael O’Neill since the start of 2020 and has impressed in various positions from inside left to centre-forward, playmaker and central midfield.

It’s now claimed that Steve Bruce has asked about his availability this window – and already been given short shrift, say Football League World.

Powell joined Stoke on a three-year deal in the summer of 2019 and had to strangely bide his time under the manager who signed him, Nathan Jones.

O’Neill promoted him to key man and, as well as carrying the burden for Stoke creatively at times, he is a central figure in the changing room.

He has caught the eye with his aggression, discipline, energy and doggedness as well as ability in the air and flair.

O’Neill said after Friday’s clash with Watford: “I thought Nick did very well (at centre-forward). We know Nick can play there and thought he would give the opposition a problem because he has the ability to drop in as well. I thought his all-round game was terrific.

“He is a player with great versatility and great ability and it’s good for Fletcher to get a goal and more game time.

“I think Powell and Fletcher together in what ever formation we play will give us a little bit more threat up the pitch.”
