Peter Crouch, giggling away as he told the story, has been re-living what end-of-season Player-of-the-Year award nights used to be like at Stoke City.
And the former City favourite has dug out one particular former team-mate who hoodwinked those he was forced to sit with.
Crouch was speaking on his That Peter Crouch podcast on BBC Five Live when the topic of debate was those end-of-season award nights…
“It’s become more for the fans and the corporate people that sponsor,” said Crouch.
“Like at Stoke, for instance, we used to have one player on each table with each sponsor.
“You had your fingers crossed that you had a good sponsor.
“You could end up with a bad one and if you’d had a bad season… oh my God.
“Like sitting next to a tyre representative and I’m talking about tread.
“You’d look over and I’d see Jon Walters having the time of his life… b******s.
“One year, all the foreign boys go more foreign. All of a sudden, they can’t understand anything.
“I remember looking at Wilson Palacios who’s having a nightmare on this table.
“I went past and said: `Wils, you all right?’ And he went: `Non comprende.’
“And I tell you now, Wilson is completely fluent.”
